How this calculator works

Why position sizing matters

Position sizing starts with the amount you can afford to lose, not the number of shares you want to buy. A wider stop produces a smaller position; a tighter stop produces a larger one for the same planned loss.

Example

With ₹1,00,000 capital, 1% risk, entry at ₹500 and a stop at ₹490, the planned risk is ₹1,000 and risk per share is ₹10. The resulting position is 100 shares.

What is position sizing?

Position sizing converts a risk limit into a tradable quantity. Instead of choosing shares or lots first, define how much of the account may be lost if the stop is reached. The calculator divides that budget—after estimated charges—by the distance between entry and stop, then checks whether the position fits the available buying power.

Position size example

With a ₹1,00,000 account, 1% risk allows a ₹1,000 loss. An entry at ₹500 and stop at ₹490 creates ₹10 risk per share. Before fees and buying-power limits, the risk-based size is 100 shares. Gaps and slippage can make the realised loss larger, so the result is a planning limit rather than a guarantee.
