How this calculator works

Weighted average, not simple average

When purchase quantities differ, adding the two prices and dividing by two is incorrect. This calculator weights each price by its quantity.

Averaging down carries risk

A lower average price does not improve the company or guarantee recovery. Recheck the investment thesis and total portfolio exposure before adding capital.

How average share price is calculated

The weighted average uses both price and quantity. A small purchase at a very different price does not affect the average as much as a large purchase. Purchase fees may be included so the result reflects total cost rather than quoted prices alone.

Averaging example

Buying 100 shares at ₹500 and another 100 at ₹450 creates 200 shares with a ₹475 average before fees. Buying more below the current average reduces the average cost, but also increases total money at risk. Use the current-price field to inspect unrealised P&L; it does not predict whether averaging is a good decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can this result predict a trade?
